Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found numerous other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police state early analysis suggest the fluid was probably human blood.

"There is still no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.

A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
