European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
