Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
