The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
